We perform tests for Radio Communications. This testing is to, first, test whether or not a particular building has enough radio frequency penetration to provide successful communications between first responders. Secondarily, if a BDA (Bi-Directional Amplifier) or ERRCS system is installed, to insure that system is operating properly on an annual basis.
Testing is governed via fire codes. We have parameters for testing laid out in the International Fire Code - Section 510 as well as in NFPA-1221.
We break a building down into 20 areas and we test each area for proper radio signal level. We also have to test critical areas, which are control rooms and stairwells for proper signal level. Critical areas must all pass and the building areas must pass with a 95% success rate.
Ultimately the Local Authority (Fire Chief, Fire Marshal) will determine the need for the testing and/or the need for additional signal level to be required.
